The Many Exciting Types of Carbon Capture
Ever ask yourself, what is carbon capture? Justin Ong, ClearPath Program Director who focuses on fossil fuels, published a new Energy 101 piece explaining the removal of carbon dioxide from the waste streams of industrial processes or the atmosphere for storage underground or “recycling” into new products. Much like the term “energy efficiency,” carbon capture is an umbrella term for many technologies. This overview describes the main technology types.
For Energy 101, Ong partnered with Ron Munson, who is a principal at Cogentiv Solutions, a consulting firm specializing in energy and environmental management. Mr. Munson was a former technology manager at the Global CCS Institute and a Senior Engineer contracting to the National Energy Technology Laboratory. Read the full piece here.
House Energy and Commerce Republicans Release List of Bipartisan Clean Energy Innovation They Say Could Pass Right Now
Following the Climate Change Town Hall, House Energy and Commerce Republicans released a list of seven bills Democrats could work with them on to reduce emissions, promote clean energy, and conserve our natural resources. Included in their list were the USE IT Act, which promotes the development of carbon capture and utilization projects; the Nuclear Energy Leadership Act (NELA), which promotes advanced nuclear energy technology; and the LEADING Act, which boosts R&D for carbon capture technology for natural gas projects. Read the full list here.
Bipartisan Clean Energy Innovation to see Test with Senate Appropriations
The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation published a paper called “Senate Appropriations: Where the Rubber Meets the Road for Energy Innovation” looking at what’s ahead for a bipartisan clean energy innovation agenda. The Energy & Water subcommittee, which invests in the Department of Energy’s clean energy R&D programs, could hold a markup early this month.
National Labs Caucus Briefing on Storage
ClearPath and Battelle will be hosting panelists next week at The House National Laboratory Caucus lunch briefing to discuss exciting new technologies and the role of DOE and National Labs in making the U.S. a world leader in energy storage.
Legislation like the Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act would create a strong research, development, and demonstration program at the Department of Energy with specific goals for duration while requiring the Secretary to establish cost goals. Passage would encourage all types of grid-scale energy storage technologies, including those that will address long duration and seasonal duration challenges. This will bolster the use of renewable energy technologies that can be used and will help reduce impacts on the environment while ensuring grid resiliency.
