“The LEADING Act takes a Manhattan project-style approach to carbon capture for natural gas. It streamlines the Department of Energy by dedicating resources to perfecting carbon capture technologies for natural gas power plants, an authorization the Department lacks today. It also encourages active public-private partnerships and establishes ambitious proof-of-concept project goals. Each of these bills are excellent examples of smart bipartisan solutions that tackle climate change, unlike the unrealistic Green New Deal.” See all the bills that will be marked up next week in Senate Energy & Natural Resources
Congratulations to New DOE Leadership
Congratulations to New DOE Leadership ClearPath Executive Director Rich Powell attended the swearing in of four new leaders at the U.S. Department of Energy this week.
Dr. Rita Baranwal, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Nuclear Energy Dr. William Bookless, Principal Deputy Administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration Dr. Christopher Fall, Director of the Office of Science Mr. Lane Genatowski, Director of ARPA-E
The ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit Takes Realistic Approach
The annual ARPA-E Technology and Innovation Summit brought together experts from diverse backgrounds to discuss America’s energy challenges including ClearPath’s Faith Smith, who had this to say about the summit, “I admired the realistic approaches that many of the sessions focused on. For example, ARPA-E staff is seeking assistance to address challenges and even utilities and policymakers are acknowledging the lack of innovative technologies required to meet decarbonization goals.”
At the summit, several ARPA-E grantees attended and were available for outside engagement and desired collaboration. A couple of the exciting projects ClearPath has our eye on in the energy storage space – Quidnet Energy and Primus Power — were in attendance.

Massachusetts may be poised for more hydropower
A couple of weeks ago, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities signed off on power purchasing agreements to buy hydropower from Hydro-Quebec who is working to get a transmission line built to export more of its clean electricity. PoliticoPro recently reported on this here.
The U.S. hydropower fleet produces enough electricity to power more than 20 million households each year, making it the fourth largest electricity source after natural gas, coal and nuclear. ClearPath has a Hydropower 101 post if you’d like to read more.
In the hearing room this week:
On July 9, The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy held a hearing on legislation including the The Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act and the Launching Energy Advancement through Innovations in Natural Gas (LEADING) Act.
The BEST ACT which would reauthorize and reorient the DOE’s grid-scale storage research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) efforts around ambitious technology goals to facilitate breakthroughs for the 21st Century U.S. electricity grid’s needs. The LEADING Act directs the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct critical carbon capture research and development for natural gas power plant applications.
